Out of all the diving offered on the East coast of Thailand, Koh Tao has the better of it. The island is famous for its laid back atmosphere on land. It is a cool paradise for those wanting to do their initial course or already certified divers continuing their education. It's not a lie, when said that Koh Tao is addictive. Backpackers usually end up staying for weeks.
The island is famous for its laid back atmosphere on land. It is a cool paradise for those wanting to do their initial course or already certified divers continuing their education. It's not a lie, when said that Koh Tao is addictive. Backpackers usually end up staying for weeks. The reef has taken some damage from the tourism, but due to a massive effort to protect and rebuild the reefs, the corals and the fish life is doing really well. Koh Tao is now offering some really good diving for divers on all levels. Many dive sites are sheltered reefs with beautiful corals, good visibility, shallow depths and little to no current. Sites are reached in less than 20 minutes by boat. Deeper dive sites with pelagic marine life can be found a short 45 minute boat ride away. All year round lucky divers are encountering Whale sharks, Reef Sharks, Rays and Turtles.
Introduction to course
The PADI Open Water Diver course is the most popular diving certificate worldwide. After completing this 3-4 day course you are certified to dive to 18 m independently with a buddy. The PADI diving license is recognized worldwide.
The course consists of five modules of learning. You study via self-study workbook and complete a knowledge review. This process is assisted by videos accompanying each chapter to reinforce what you have learned. The instructor reviews everything with you to ensure that everything required are confidently understood.
The practical learning consists of pool sessions and four open water dives. Dive one and two are conducted at a depth of max 12 meters and dive three and four are conducted at max 18 meters. The final stage of the PADI Open Water course is an exam, which is a multiple choice exam covering all that you have learnt. Remember that the course is performance based and not time based. The course generally takes 3 to 4 days, with the theoretical, the pool and the open water part successfully passed.
The PADI Open Water Course is performance based. That means you have to understand and pass the theory and perform the in-water skills correctly and with ease. Therefore, the itinerary can vary slightly from course to course. The course will take 3 to 4 days depending on the students enrolled. To give you an idea of what to expect, see the itinerary below:
Day 1: Arrive and relax, start at 4pm watching the videos & reading the book
Day 2: Theory and confined water sessions
Day 3: Complete any remaining theory and confined water sessions in the morning and then afternoon Open Water dives 1 & 2
Day 4: Morning 6am start for Open Water dives 3 & 4 and back at the dive school for 11am and relax for the rest of the day.
Day 5: Relax & check out.
Please allow a minimum of 24 hours, after your last dive, before flying.
(some countries will allow you to fly after 18 hours on land).
If you want a longer itinerary, you can add extra days of diving and accommodation upon booking.
Due to ocean and weather conditions, the itinerary can be subject to change.

It can be hard picking the right accommodation when arriving on Koh Tao, the options are many and the price range is broad. We've based the choice of accommodation on the dive center. When diving, you want the dive center to be top professional and above all, experienced and safe in all matters. Your accommodation with the dive center is basic, but clean and cozy. You can chose between wooden bungalows, with a hammock on the porch, or a comfy bed in the dorm room at our social hostel. The dive center itself is something else; we know all the dive centers on the island. We recommend this one! Both the hostel and the resort are sharing facilities with the dive center, including swimming pool, restaurant and bar. Both the hostel, the dive center and the resort is located right on Sairee Beach, the most popular beach on Koh Tao. Please note: The beach bungalows are basic wooden bungalows. There are no A/C or hot water in these rooms, but there is a fan to keep you cool at night, and the shower water gets warmed by the sun during the day. Just don't be the last one to shower. ;) The bungalows have lots of charm and soul, and we love them dearly...! But, if you want A/C, we recommend the dorm rooms in the hostel, or that you upgrade to an A/C hotel room.
The easiest way to get to Koh Tao is to take the bus from Bangkok. The bus leaves twice a day from Khaosan Road in central Bangkok to connect with the Lomprayah High Speed Catamaran in Chumphon, for a 1½ hour crossing to Koh Tao. If travelling down to Koh Tao in the high seasons or around a full moon party it's always a good idea to book your bus ticket in advance.
